Brighton Volunteering Reference

I did a bit of research recently about volunteering options here in Brighton. It’s nice to have a personal reference, it’s even better to share.

Resources

People

  • Volunteer — BUCFP
    • We provide practical support, education, advice and much more to the unemployed and those in poor living conditions, benefit claimants, the unwaged, pensioners, families and those on low incomes.
    • The centre is run by volunteers for the benefit of all users, alongside a small team of part time paid workers.
  • St John Ambulance homeless outreach
    • Primary health care and first aid services for homeless and vulnerably housed people. Nurse-led service, podiatrist, basic health assessments, referrals to appropriate local services.
    • Mobile treatment centre: - Mondays, 9am-11:30am at the First Base Day Centre, St Stephens Hall/Montpelier Place, Brighton BN1 3BF - Thursdays, 6:30pm-7:30pm at the Mobile Treatment Centre on Brighton seafront
  • Volunteer at The Clock Tower Sanctuary and help homeless young people
    • Volunteers are a vital part of The Clock Tower Sanctuary team. They help with the day-to-day running of the day centre and provide support and a friendly welcome to the young people experiencing homelessness who come here.
    • If you volunteer with us you’ll be working directly with the young people who use our service. You’ll spend time getting to know them, chatting and offering them support. You’ll also help with things like putting away food donations, making up care packages and popping out to get fresh food for meals.
  • La Di Da Society - Volunteering
    • The La Di Da Society is a great project working to combat social isolation and loneliness in older people. They run cabaret tea party events that are lots of fun to volunteer at.
  • Social Connection Brighton | Justlife
  • Home - BHT Sussex
    • Brighton Housing Trust
    • BHT Sussex is a housing association and a homeless charity. We provide essential services across Brighton & Hove, Eastbourne and Hastings, as well as elsewhere in Sussex. We see it as our role to both challenge the causes of homelessness, poverty and marginalisation and to deal with the consequences.
    • Want you to commit to one shift per week for six months.
    • Volunteer for Us - BHT Sussex
  • The Social Society
    • If you’re interested in volunteering and giving back, these are for you. Think pop-up supper clubs with strangers who feel like mates by the end. Turn up, have fun, and feel inspired. After coming to an event you automatically have free access to our online Volunteer Hub, connecting you to all kinds of meaningful volunteer opportunities.
  • Loneliness & Social Health Charity Brighton & Hove - Together Co
    • Everyone belongs at Together Co. By joining our team of volunteers you will make a positive difference by building connections in your community. We understand that life can be very busy, which is why we have designed our volunteering opportunities to flex around everyday life, whether you are looking to help out occasionally, more frequently, at home, or in the community. Volunteering with us will help you to build and share your skills and experience. It’s also a great way to meet new friends, or to introduce yours to new and exciting opportunities.

Food

Misc

  • Charity shops
    • The Scope charity shop on London road is about to move to a much larger site located where “The Bike Shed” store used to be. It’s roughly 4 times the size of the old store and they have very few volunteers

Epilogue Day 1: Santiago Rest Day. 0km

Today is my Santiago rest day. My chance to rest, relax, recover from the hundreds of kilometres that have passed underfoot in the last 16 days. I should have a lie in. Instead, I'm awake before six.

Day 27: Arzúa – O Pedrouzo 19.4 km

I awake in the dorm, my mind skips around in the dark, the muffled light snoring entering my ears through my plugs is a comforting sound, but not enough to send me back to sleep. The last few days have seen our little group become very close. Tomorrow is the beginning of the end of that particular form, and the end of 28 days of walking for me. The thought of this starts some waves of overwhelming emotions.
